on names

Turcafinwë Tyelkormo Fëanárion, his full name in Quenya, his mother-tongue.

Turcafinwë is his father-name, given by Fëanáro. Turca/turka meaning “strong/powerful in body”, and -finwë ( his grandfather's name ) is the same element as in his brothers’s names. He is Turcafinwë and Turco to himself and others when he is young, but it falls out of use in his adolescence, save by his father.

Tyelkormo is his mother-name, given by Nerdanel, and his preferred name in time. Tyelka/tyelca for “hasty/swift”, from the primitive elvish kyeleka ( the root kyelek ) and ormo, “riser” or “to rise”, means his temper, its volatility. He prefers Tyelkormo for himself and of others when he is older, thus for most of his life.

Celegorm is the Sindarin form of Tyelkormo, thus, celeg from the same primitive elvish root kyelek, it’s used in Beleriand in the lands of Thingol’s ban. He doesn’t use it for himself, he accepts it in Nargothrond—partly out of need. However, it becomes the name by which he is remembered.

Tyelko and Turko are nicknames, short for Tyelkormo and Turcafinwë, respectively. His brothers may use them freely, as maybe his cousins ( at least, Írissë... ).

The Fair, an epessë... fashioned quite after his own mind, if one were to ask. Regrettably, he shares it with Dior.

Fëanárion means Fëanor’s son — Fëanár(o) + the patronymic suffix -ion (“son”), and it’s truest by the oath he has sworn.

Friend and follower of Oromë
he was known almost as well as by any other name, still in Valinor.

Lord of Himlad he ( and his brother Curufin ) is in Beleriand, where Himlad is between the Rivers Aros and Celon, and the land south of the Pass of Aglon, that he holds until the Dagor Bragollach.

Prince of the Noldor
are Celegorm and all his brothers.
